Natural calcium carbonate is available also in the snail’s shell The snails’ shells are burnt in the lime kiln (calcination) above 900 degrees Celcius The shells are then converted into caustic material known as unslaked lime or quicklime (Calcium Oxide) To the burnt shells (unslaked lime), water is added; and then, water and burnt shells react to form calcium oxide generating tremendous heat. Water is added to such an amount so that it becomes a dense white-colored pest that is consumed with betelnut and betel leaves. Chewing these betel leaf compounds is a part of culture and hospitality in the subcontinent including Bangladesh However, mixing lime with betelnut and betel leaf makes saliva color dense red, that when spitted spoils places. For this reason, chewing betel leaves in many countries are strongly prohibited. Owing to the easy availability of mineral limes nowadays, the importance and prices of hand-made slaked lime have been reduced. This caused the ‘lime makers’ to suffer from financial losses. Alternative ways to rehabilitate these lime makers need to be found.
